As much as I like Mustard’s videos, this one missed out a lot of important info about the APT and even worse made the battle with the HST a mere footnote.

As for the APT, it's  such a shame. A train 20 years too early and could have really prevented a lot of piss poor decisions my governments have made infrastructure wise. Still we're finally learning (pending on who the new Tory leader is) that rail is the way forward.

There is of course the story that widespread reports of motion sickness had more to do with an open bar for reporters on the demo ride, as opposed to a real problem with the tilting mechanism. Given that the Turbo Train/ Pendo lino (whose tilting mechanism is derived from the APT)/Acela/etc. don’t have this problem, I’m inclined to believe that the APT’s motion problem probably wasn’t as serious as it was made out to be.

The motion sickness was indeed real but for an incredibly annoying reason. The tilt on the APT was perfect and in it couldn’t be felt when it happened. This of course didn’t re ally match up with what your eyes saw as the train banked around corners.

The end result was that on modern systems the tilt is delayed, rougher and of course not as much. So not perfect meaning that the current Pendolinos can only allow for 140mph running (if the signalling allowed it) where as the APT were supposed to do 155mph.

Al so the open bar d idn’t help...

And, my understanding is that they fixed the problem by reducing the amount the cars would tilt, so passengers would still feel some leaning to match with what they w ere seeing, but that doing that also kind of defeated the purpose of building the tilting train in the first place, since they also could have just banked the corners of the track itself for less money.

Really,  it was. There wasn’t anything wrong with the engineering, the trains used were all preproduction prototypes not built to true commercial standards.
